Enconvo for Linux is in beta and ships on the Beta update channel. It is built for everyday use, but things can still change between builds. If something breaks, tell us on the feedback site.
Choose how you will run it
Requirements
- 64-bit Intel/AMD (x86-64). There is no ARM build yet.
- Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, RHEL 9, Amazon Linux 2023, or newer. Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux 9 count as RHEL 9. Older systems can’t run Enconvo: their C library is too old.
- Memory: we recommend at least 2 GB free, and 4 GB if the agent will use a browser.
- A normal user account. Run Enconvo as yourself, not as root, because its agent runs commands with that user’s rights. On a server, create a user just for Enconvo.
Download the Beta
The Beta comes in three forms: a.deb for Debian and Ubuntu, an .rpm for Fedora, RHEL, Rocky, AlmaLinux and openSUSE, and a portable .tar.gz for anything else.
These commands find the newest Beta and download it.
- Debian, Ubuntu
- Fedora, RHEL, Rocky, AlmaLinux, openSUSE
- Portable .tar.gz
Install on a desktop
The package manager also installs what the app’s windows need, GTK and WebKitGTK.- Debian, Ubuntu
- Fedora, openSUSE
- Portable .tar.gz
Install on a server
A server doesn’t need the desktop libraries, so leave them out.1
Install the package
- Debian, Ubuntu

Start Enconvo as a service
127.0.0.1:54580. It starts again when the server boots. If the command says it runs only while you are logged in, run the sudo loginctl enable-linger command it prints.3
Sign in
enconvo.com/device on your phone or computer, check that the page names your account, and approve the code within 10 minutes.4
Open Enconvo from your computer
Run this on your own computer, then leave it running:Open http://localhost:54580 in your browser. You get the same Chat Window and Settings as in the desktop app.
Reach it without an SSH tunnel
The tunnel is the safest way in, because nothing on the server is open to the network. The website has your account’s full rights and can reach the server’s files, so anyone who can open it can use both. To open it from other computers directly, for example on a private network or VPN:enconvo service url prints the address with its connection token. Keep that address private, and don’t expose this port to the internet.
For a public address, put a reverse proxy with HTTPS in front of Enconvo and tell Enconvo the address it serves:
Use Browser Use on a server
The agent can browse on a server with no screen: Enconvo starts its own headless browser, called Enconvo Browser, the first time the agent needs one. Install Chromium first.- Debian
- Ubuntu
- Fedora
- RHEL, Rocky, AlmaLinux
localhost, opens beside the chat as a live view too, so it works through the SSH tunnel.
What works where
On Wayland, global shortcuts need a desktop that offers them to apps.
These Mac features aren’t on Linux: SmartBar, PopBar, Dynamic Island, App Sidebar, Avatar, Voice Command, Live Talk and Captioning.
Local chat models run from GGUF files, on systems with glibc 2.38 or newer. MLX models need a Mac.
Your account on Linux
If your account also uses the iPhone app, your default chat, speech and image choices follow your account to this computer. A provider that runs on your own API key doesn’t follow, because keys aren’t copied. Add the key in Settings on this computer if you want the same provider here. If your server’s clock is in another time zone than your browser, Enconvo offers to use yours for times and Automations.Update
A Beta build stays on the Beta channel. To change it, open Settings → General and set Update Channel. See Updates. On a desktop, use Update in the Chat Window when it appears. The portable build replaces itself. For a.deb or .rpm, Enconvo downloads the new package to your Downloads folder, and you install it as in Install on a desktop.
On a server:
.deb or .rpm, enconvo update downloads the new package and prints the command to install it as root. Run that command, then restart the service:
.tar.gz, enconvo update replaces the folder and restarts its service for you. If the new version doesn’t start, it puts the old one back.
Troubleshooting
To read Enconvo’s log on a server:
Remove Enconvo
~/.config/enconvo. Delete that folder to remove them too.
