PopBar

PopBar appears near selected text when enabled. Its commands can explain, translate, edit, search, copy, or read the selection aloud, and PopBar extensions add more buttons, such as a web search, a text converter, or sending the selection to another app.

Use PopBar

1. Open Settings → Primary Function Area → PopBar and enable it.
2. Select a short passage in a supported app.
3. Choose an action in the toolbar.
4. Review the result before using the command’s copy, paste, or replacement action.

You can also run Show PopBar with an assigned shortcut. Selection detection depends on the app and Accessibility permission; secure fields and some custom editors may not expose selectable text.

Choose the buttons

The Buttons tab of PopBar settings shows the bar’s buttons in one strip. Drag a button to reorder it, point to it and click × to take it off, or click it for more options. Reset to Default brings back the default buttons. Buttons that don’t fit on the bar are under ⌄ at its end. Click ⌄ to open the More panel: it lists those buttons, with a search field for every button and setting. Once you’ve changed the buttons, Reset to Default also appears there, under Turn Off PopBar, and brings back the default buttons and their order, with Undo. Click Add Buttons to open the Button Gallery. It has Ask AI, Ask in Sidebar, Open Link, Search, Copy, Translate, Explain, Fix Spelling, AI Edit, Read Aloud, and more, the actions of your PopBar extensions, and a way to make your own AI Command. You can also add a Writing Toolkit command for your own editing workflow. The toolbar reflects the buttons you added.

Control where it appears

The When It Shows tab sets whether PopBar shows only with its hotkey or everywhere, and the places where it stays away. Exclude apps where automatic selection actions would interrupt your work. Escape dismisses the current toolbar.

PopBar extensions

PopBar extensions are small add-ons whose actions become PopBar buttons. They use the extension format of PopClip, so extensions written for PopClip install in Enconvo too. PopBar extensions need Enconvo for Mac.

Install from Enconvo’s catalog

1. Open Plugins and choose the PopBar Extensions tab.
2. Browse the catalog by category, or type in the search field to find one.
3. Click + next to an extension, then Install.
4. The card that follows lists the extension’s buttons, when each one shows, and where it is. Choose On Bar, In ⌄ More, or Off for each, then click Done. Settings… opens the extension’s options.

New buttons go to the front of the PopBar’s ⌄ More panel, or onto the bar while it has room. ⌄ shows a dot until you open the panel, where the new buttons are marked NEW. Enconvo reviews every extension in its catalog before listing it, and installs exactly the version it reviewed. Installed extensions are listed at the top of the tab. When Enconvo has reviewed a newer version of one, its row in the catalog shows Update. In the Button Gallery, Get more… opens the same tab. You can also browse the catalog on the web at app.enconvo.com/popbar-extensions. On your Mac, an extension’s Install button opens Enconvo, which shows what the extension can do before anything installs.

Add an extension from elsewhere

Click Add PopBar extension… on the PopBar Extensions tab, or in the Add menu of the Plugins page. Then do one of these:

• Paste a link to a .popclipextz package.
• Paste a snippet, the short text form of an extension that starts with #popclip.
• Click Choose file… to pick a .popclipextz package or a .popclipext folder on your Mac.

Click Preview. Enconvo reads the extension without running it and lists what it can do beyond the PopBar, such as running scripts, connecting to the internet, opening apps, or pressing keys. Nothing installs until you click Allow and install, which ends on the same card of buttons as an install from the catalog. An extension that doesn’t come from Enconvo’s catalog isn’t reviewed by Enconvo, so install it only from a source you trust. When you select a snippet in any app, the PopBar shows an Install Extension button first. Clicking it opens the same preview.

Import from PopClip

If you use PopClip, click Import from PopClip… on the PopBar Extensions tab. Enconvo copies your PopClip extensions and their settings, in PopClip’s order, and adds their actions to the PopBar. PopClip itself isn’t changed.

• An extension that is turned off in PopClip installs, but isn’t added to the PopBar.
• API keys and passwords aren’t copied. Enconvo lists the extensions that need them, so enter them again in each extension’s settings.
• An extension that matches a version in Enconvo’s catalog counts as reviewed and updates from the catalog.

Settings, updates, and removal

Open an extension from the PopBar Extensions tab to see its page. Its PopBar buttons section lists each button and when it shows, and lets you put it on the bar, in ⌄ More, or off the PopBar. Arrange all buttons in PopBar Settings opens the Buttons tab. An extension with options shows Settings at the top of its page, and Settings… on its card in the Button Gallery. An extension installed from a link updates from the same link. When an update can do more than the version you allowed, Enconvo shows only what’s new and asks again before updating. To remove an extension, open it from the PopBar Extensions tab and uninstall it. Its buttons leave the PopBar.

What isn’t supported yet

• Extensions that sign in to an account.
• Extensions that build their actions each time the bar appears.

Enconvo tells you during the preview when an extension uses one of these.

Suggest an extension

Enconvo’s catalog lives in github.com/Enconvo/popbar-extensions. Open an issue or pull request there to suggest an extension for review.

Troubleshooting

• No toolbar: check Enable, Accessibility permission, and app exclusions.
• Wrong text: make a fresh selection and invoke PopBar again.
• Missing command: check the Buttons tab and verify that the command’s plugin is installed.
• Result does not replace text: the destination app may not allow replacement; copy the result and paste it into an editable field.
• Extension buttons don’t appear: click ⌄ at the end of the PopBar, where new buttons go, or check the extension’s page in Plugins: an Off button isn’t on the PopBar. Some buttons show only for text they can work on: Base64 Decode, for example, shows only for text that looks like Base64, so selecting plain text shows only Base64 Encode.
• An extension button replaced the selected text: many extensions paste their result over the selection, as they do in PopClip. Where the text can’t be edited, the result is copied instead.
• Catalog doesn’t load: check your connection, then click Try again on the PopBar Extensions tab.

Change the result’s model or settings

For commands with an AI model setting, the result toolbar offers a model picker. Changing it updates the command’s default for later runs too. The result window’s Settings button opens the command that produced that result, such as Plugins → Writing Toolkit → Explain.
