OCR reads the text in a screenshot or an image, so you can copy it, paste it, translate it, or ask about it. Reach for it when you can’t select the text, such as in an image, a video frame, or a scanned page. You choose whether the text is read on your Mac or by an online service.

Before you start

Enconvo needs the Screen Recording permission to capture your screen. See Permissions.

Copy text from the screen

  1. Run Screenshot OCR from SmartBar.
  2. Drag over the area with the text.
  3. The text opens in the Dynamic Island. Click Copy, or Paste (⌘↩) to put it in the app you’re using.
From the same result you can also click Translate or Ask AI. The ⋯ menu has Keep Original Line Breaks, Copy Image, Save Image…, Select Area Again, Add to Knowledge Base, and OCR Settings…. To read the area again with another provider, click the provider’s name above the text and pick one. When the provider knows where each line is, switch to the image view to select lines on the screenshot, then click Copy Selection.

Choose a provider

Open Settings → OCR, pick a provider, and click Set as Default. Each OCR command can also use a provider of its own: set OCR Provider in its settings under Settings → Plugins → OCR. See Provider Catalog for each provider’s fields.

Get better results

Capture a tight, readable area at a size where the text is easy to read. Check columns, tables, punctuation, code indentation, and characters that look alike by hand. A scanned document can need OCR even when it’s a PDF file.
