# Translation

> Translate the text you select, a part of your screen, or what you dictate.

Enconvo translates the text you select with **Translator**, text on your screen with **Screenshot Translate**, and your speech as you dictate. All of them are part of the [Writing Toolkit](https://docs.enconvo.ai/features/writing-tools.md) and run on your AI model.

## Translate selected text

1. Select the passage in any app.
2. Click **Translate** in PopBar, or open SmartBar and run **Translator**.
3. Read the translation, then click **Paste** to replace the original, or copy it.

## Choose the languages

Open **Settings → AI Commands**, pick **Translator** under **Built-in**, and set its languages in the **Language** section.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Target Language** | The language Translator writes in. Text in any language other than the Source Language goes into it. **Auto** uses your Response Language (**Settings → About You**), or your Mac's language when that is Auto too |
| **Source Language** | The language paired with the target: text already in the Target Language is translated into it. **Auto** uses your Response Language, or English when that is the Target Language |

For example, with English as the target and Chinese as the source, Chinese or French text becomes English, and English text becomes Chinese.

## Translate part of the screen

1. Run **Screenshot Translate** from SmartBar.
2. Drag over the area you want translated.
3. The translation appears in the Dynamic Island. Click it to open the chat, where you can ask follow-up questions about the screenshot and its translation.

Screenshot Translate sends the area to Translator's model as an image. To read the text with your OCR provider first and translate that text, turn on **Need OCR** in **Settings → Plugins → Writing Toolkit → Screenshot Translate**. Then an OCR mistake can change the meaning, so compare the result with the screen. See [OCR](https://docs.enconvo.ai/ai/ocr.md) to set up a provider.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Need OCR** | Reads the text with your OCR provider before translating. Off by default |
| **Follow-up Command** | The command that answers the messages you send after the translation |
| **Clear After Closing** | Returns the Dynamic Island to an empty input 10 seconds after you close the translation, unless you replied to it |

## Translate as you speak

While you dictate, choose **Translate** in Dictation's **Clean up** options, and Enconvo types what you say in your Response Language, or in English if you already speak it. This option is the **Dictation Translate** command, which works on the recognized text before it's inserted. See [Dictation](https://docs.enconvo.ai/features/dictation.md#clean-up-or-translate-as-you-speak).

For live translated captions, choose a speech provider that offers live translation in [Live Captioning](https://docs.enconvo.ai/features/live-captioning.md#translate-captions).

## Keep terms consistent

Translator runs on the model set in **Settings → AI Commands → All Commands**. To use a different one, change **AI Model** on Translator's page.

For terminology you use often, click **Customize** on Translator's page, or write an [Agent](https://docs.enconvo.ai/ai/agents.md) instruction, and add a glossary. Say what must stay as it is, such as names, technical identifiers, or quoted passages.

## Troubleshooting

| Problem | What to do |
| - | - |
| The translation is in the wrong language | Check Translator's **Target Language** and **Source Language**, and any **Post Action** |
| Text is missing from the translation | For selected text, check the Accessibility permission. For Screenshot Translate with **Need OCR** on, check what OCR read |
| Screenshot Translate captures nothing | Check the Screen Recording permission in [Permissions](https://docs.enconvo.ai/configuration/permissions.md) |
